Toasted Mulled Cider

Makes 1½ quarts

3 cinnamon sticks, plus more to serve
2 cardamom pods
½ teaspoon whole allspice berries
½ teaspoon whole cloves
¼ teaspoon black peppercorns
2 tablespoons finely chopped crystallized ginger
1 (50-ounce) bottle apple juice or cider
1 orange, sliced

1. In a small skillet, cook 3 cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, allspice, cloves, and peppercorns over medium heat, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat; let cool completely.

2. Transfer spices to a heavy-duty resealable plastic bag; seal. Pound with a rolling pin or meat mallet until cinnamon sticks are broken into small pieces.
