    Peering through the metal bars of the kennel, I saw Sally the senior Staffy huddled in the corner, looking truly broken.

    Aged 15, she’d been surrendered to the pound by her owners, and it was clear her world had been turned upside down.

    Climbing in beside her, I gently ran my hands through her greying fur.
