Gangs become necessary evil

LAST week, the community of Shallcross in Durban was the scene of several violent killings.

In the first incident, an alleged high-profile and known drug kingpin, Yaganathan Pillay (also known as Teddy Mafia), was gunned down by two men at his home. Following this incident, members of the community apprehended the two suspects, assaulted them, set them alight and beheaded them, in what appeared to be a form of mob justice.

Furthermore, when the police arrived on the scene, they were treated with hostility
