WHATEVER has happened to words and phrases that generate strong positive affirmations that uplift and inspire?
I am thinking of the likes of goal weight, laughter, single-malt whiskey, prawns, cancer in remission, bear hug, bonus, love and rainbow – a few among a whole dictionary of others.
It is enough to make you despondent and feel demoralised that, year after year, words with a negative connotation have been clinching honour as Word of the Year.
“Xenophobia” was chosen Word of the Year in 2016. “State Capture” came tops as the 2017 South African Word of the Year. In 2018, it was not so
