SATURDAY DECEMBER 19
ELF (TVNZ 2, 7.00pm). Here’s an argument to have: is Ron Burgundy of Anchorman Will Ferrell’s greatest comic character or is it Buddy, his very tall dwarf in Elf? His performance as Santa’s-not-so-little-helper who was raised by elves at the North Pole and who goes looking for his real dad in New York makes this a silly seasonal delight. (2003)
DR SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (THREE, 7.00pm). Or how Jim Carrey stole a beloved children’s classic. This live-action adaptation is a big ole gaudy mess, and an unusual failure for director Ron Howard. There’s a more recent version screening on Christmas Day (2000)
Gus Van Sant directs Joaquin Phoenix in a patchy biopic based on the life of controversial cartoonist and alcoholic paraplegic John Callahan. (2018)
