True reflection

Listening to my daughter nag me about joining her at the gym, I wasn’t feeling particularly enthusiastic.

‘Come on, Mum,’ she encouraged me.

‘I need some moral support.’

Bethannie, then 20, was off to Camp America that summer in 2014 and wanted to get fit.

If me joining her at the gym was going to help, then I could hardly say no.

‘Oh go on then,’ I agreed, somewhat begrudgingly.

But at 23 stone, the gym was hardly a place I was very familiar with.

In fact, the thought of going to workout in a room full of super-fit people filled me with dread.
