300ml (10fl oz) buttermilk, at room temperature
3 tsp baking powder
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
360g (12oz) caster sugar
5 large free-range eggs

For the salted caramel

300g (10½oz) white caster or granulated sugar
135g (4½oz) salted butter
190ml (6½fl oz) double cream
2 tsp salt

For the chocolate buttercream icing
