AFRICA MUST LOOK INWARD IF IT WANTS TO GROW

As many African countries face uneven growth, rising debt and an uncertain global environment, economists and policymakers agree that African states need a continent-wide economic stimulus that can only be realised by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

The Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic has taken a toll on human life and has brought major disruptions to economic activity across the world and on the continent.

A World Bank report titled The African Continental Free Trade Area: Economic and Distributional Effects forecasts that economic growth will decline from -2.1% last year to -5.1% this year, the first continent-wide recession in 25 years.
