“Even in winter, when it’s -25C, there is street food”
‘Mountains of fresh herbs and tomatoes doesn’t fit the perception of Siberian food,’ says Alissa Timoshkina, recalling Omsk market in summer. ‘It’s still my favourite place to visit when I go back.’
The London-based cookery writer, teacher and events caterer is used to challenging preconceptions about her native region. Far from a forbidding land of frozen exile,in2019’s Salt & Time(MitchellBeazley),Alissa describes Siberia as a vibrantly multicultural region of astonishing natural beauty, where, from summer lakeside barbecues to hot pirozhki buns from street stalls in midwinter, food is central to how Siberians enjoy life.
