Hunting Bullets

FEDERAL

Federal’s new bullet is called the Edge TLR, which utilizes construction rooted in the legendary Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. The rear half is solid gilding metal (95 percent copper, 5 percent zinc) and the soft lead frontal core is bonded in place. The boattail has a hollow polymer tip and uktra-sleek profile with a high BC. The heat resistant tip breaks free upon impact, and a skived nose enables the Edge to expand reliably, allowing the petals to peel back, even at low velocities. The tough copper shank and bonded lead core ensures deep penetration. The Edge TLR gets its high BC from a secant ogive which tapers more gradually along its length than a standard spitzer which reduces drag, and a longer boattail with an optimal angle which increases the bullet’s length without affecting stability. Federal claims the Edge can do anything the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw can do, but will hold up better over the long haul. Federal now offers Edge bullets as components.

BERGER

No comparison of efficient long-range bullets would be complete without including Berger. Famous for making match-grade bullets, Berger, who was first to popularize the “hybrid” ogive that combines the best characteristics of the secant and tangent ogives recently introduced bullets which have secant ogives, but are round where the bullet transitions from ogive to bearing surface more gradually which helps the bullet centre in the bore and greatly improves accuracy. This year Berger has added five new bullets to its Long Range Hybrid Target line-up:.224 85.5gn; 6mm 109gn; 144gn 6.5mm; 190gn .284; and 220-gn .308. There’s also two new EOL Elite Hunter bullets - 156gn 6.5mm; and 245gn .308.
