Hunting Bullets
BROWNING
In 2016 Browning entered the ammunition game by offering ammo loaded with two very different lines of hunting ammunition: the (Rapid Expansion Matrix Tip) (BXR) and the Browning Controlled Expansion Terminal Tip (BXC) bullet designed by Winchester Ammunition engineers specifically for deer and antelope.
The BXR features a cup-and-core bullet with a large polymer tip which is a uniquely blended copper-polymer matrix that fragments on impact to expose the bullet’s hollow-point and initiate expansion shortly after impacting thin-skinned game. The opposite is true of the BXC, which is a tougher bullet, designed for larger game. It has a bonded core developed for big-game animals where deep penetration is needed. The “Terminal Tip” is made of brass. Bullet weights are not the norm-97gn in 243, 134gn in .270, and 155gn in .308.
BXR bullets of conventional weights are loaded in seven different cartridge for deer-hunting: .243 Win., 97gn, 3100fps;
.270 Win., 134gn, 3006 fps; .30-30, 155gn, 2390fps; .308 Win., 155gn, 2820fps; .30-06, 155gn, 2920fps; .300 Win. Mag., 155gn, 3260fps; .300 WSM 155gn, 3260fps. Named “Deer Season XP Copper Impact,” this bullet features a large polymer tip seated in massive hollow-point cavity and has a moderate boattail that enhances aerodynamics. As those who have used Barnes X know, monometal bullets retain weight better than lead-core expanding bullets, and hold together to drive deeper through heavy bone and dense muscle to reach vital organs. They gain this kind of performance because copper doesn’t fragment or shed its core like the traditional soft-point does. Monometal bullets can achieve large frontal diameters while suffering minimal loss of mass and momentum. Other advantages are: they are more accurate than lead-core bullets in maximum-spec chambers and tend to self-align in the rifling without much distortion. The Copper Impact XP was actually designed for extreme expansion with some fragmenting, while maintaining a deeppenetrating shank. On medium-size game they may exit and leave a blood trail to follow if the deer runs. Initially available in
