‘People are often puzzled when they see my Anglia from the rear,’ remarks Bob Kent. It is an understandable reaction, for although 578 BJB seems to be a typical 105E forward of the B-pillars, the side windows and tailgate are totally unexpected. With coachwork by Friary Motors, it is one of just three known Anglia Tourings, and the only example believed to remain on the road. It is a car which, as the advertising copywriters promised, 'blends the many superlative qualities of the saloon with extra load space and general accessibility.’
When the 105E made its debut in late 1959, there was initially no estate version, for the new Anglia did not have Ford GB’s line-up to itself. The Prefect 100E gained the new 997cc OHV Kent engine, a four-speed gearbox and extra trim to become the Prefect 107E, while the outgoing Anglia 100E gained a (very) Spartan interior to become the Popular, as a successor to the 103E.
