A common misconception among travellers is that you absolutely must have the works-burger, heavy-duty, dual-range 4WD truck/built-like-a-Shermantank, off-road caravan/recovery-communications-survival gear extravaganza to proceed anywhere beyond the blacktop. Anything less and the complete disintegration of your equipment and a lonely, miserable death in the wilderness are certain.
While it’s understandable that many people don’t want to risk their safety and six figures worth of rig by taking to the dirt, you can reach some of the country’s most beautiful, captivating places on well-made and maintained tracks that, in some cases, can be driven quite safely and easily in a Holden Commodore.
If you’re in the process of putting a travelling outfit together, it is worth ticking the outback option box, if available, on your caravan or camper of choice.
