VW GOLF: WATER PUMP OPTIONS

Q My 1988 VW Golf MkII 1600 has developed a small leak from the water pump, which is leaving a rusty trail from where the evaporated coolant has been. It is a job I intend to tackle in the coming weeks, and I have been looking around at the various outlets to price up a new water pump. I have discovered that there are two options available, and would like to ask your advice on which one of these I should go for. The first option is to purchase just the pump which I would have thought would be the normal choice, and the second option is to purchase the pump with the backing unit. This works out slightly more expensive and would also involve more work. Which option should I choose?
