HOT START ISSUE

QI have a starting issue on my 1967 Rover 2000 Automatic. When cold, the starter will crank the engine over without any issue until the engine fires into life and runs smoothly. However, if I try to start the engine when it is hot, then the starter will crank for a few turns before it disengages from the engine. This scenario will continue for six or seven goes until the engine will then catch and fire up. Do you think the starter is at fault?

A The symptoms you describe are typical of an over-advanced ignition setting on the Rover 2000. As the engine is cranked over, the plugs spark and ignite the mixture, but the spark is too advanced and with the piston before TDC the engine kicks back slightly, disengaging the starter motor.
