It’s easy to find advice for creating a wedding budget, but asking your parents for the equivalent of your college tuition to fund said budget? Not so easy. Sure, you can find lists of all the points that should be covered in your vendor contracts, but what about the part where you have to negotiate those points face-to-face? And how do you find a way to ask your future in-laws to cut their guest list? Whether you’re hoping your parents will chip in for some (or all) of the wedding, bringing up the “B” word can be the fastest way to kill that newly engaged high. Don’t spring the money question on your parents during a meet and greet with the future in-laws. A better approach: “Mom, Dad, we were hoping we could talk with you about the budget. When would be a good time for you?” When you do meet with them, be gracious and let your parents know you want them to do more than just sign the checks (even if you don’t mean that)—it will go a very long way.
