With cold weather and limited rainfall, South Africa generally experiences dry air conditions during winter. Cities at a higher altitude, such as Johannesburg and Pretoria, can feel the consequences even more severely.

And the drier the air, the more moisture gets pulled from whatever sources are available, which include your hair, skin and nails. This can result in dull and dehydrated skin, lacklustre hair and unhealthy-looking nails.

The combination of dry and cold weather can pull natural moisture out of your hair, putting you at a higher risk of frizzing, split ends and dandruff.

“Hair is hydroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Without this, the hair has to be boosted with moisture,” says master stylist at Tanaz Hair, Shelene Shaer.
