SIGHT FOR SORE EYES

IF FLASHES of light or spooky shadows suddenly appear in your vision – dark swirls or a dotted mist like a net curtain in a light breeze – get to your doctor or optician without delay. You are likely to have a tear in your retina, and you may even be one of the several hundred people each year in which it detaches, putting your sight at severe risk.

When many were enjoying a leisurely coffee on a long-weekend Monday, I was lying flat on my back getting my retina reattached. A few days before, I’d experienced swirls in my eye, like a threatening sky in Harry Potter, then the alarming curtain effect.
