The retina is a thin nerve cell layer lining the inside of the eye, which is sensitive to light, forming an image for the brain to interpret. Retinas detach after developing holes that allow the vitreous ( jelly-like fluid within the eye) to pass underneath, lifting it off supporting tissues. Small blood vessels might tear and bleed. Without treatment, it usually leads to blindness.
