Open to hemp-tation?
Packed with healthy protein for vegetarians, good fats, amino acids and minerals, the seeds of the hemp plant (a variant of Cannabis sativa that has no psychoactive properties) are a bona fide superfood. The hulled (shelled) seeds – also called hemp hearts – are delicious scattered through a Buddha bowl, used as a golden crust for fish tacos or baked into shortcake, while hemp flour adds essential fatty acids to bread. You could also try nutty hemp seed oil in salad dressings or drizzled over grilled or roasted veges or popcorn – but don’t heat it as it has a low smoke point and you’ll remove some of the nutritional value, too.
