DOGS AND A RAW FOOD DIET

I appreciate that Tony Buckwell acknowledges that some people won’t agree with what he says (Sporting Answers, 22 January). In the opinion of many vets, raw chicken, pheasant or any other smallish bird carcases pose very little threat to a dog’s health. Something the size of a turkey might not be suitable.

The carcases must be raw. Raw chicken bones are not brittle and do not splinter — cooked ones do. In fact most chickens we buy these days are so young that their bones are positively soft. The Raw Feeding Veterinary Society (RFVS) supports the feeding of raw bones and I believe your gundog expert David Tomlinson feeds his dogs raw chicken wings on a regular basis.
