etter writing is a dying art rarely practised these days, but its rarity means it has never held more significance or importance when received. In an age when most communication is electronic in one form or another (and our post bag more likely to contain circulars or bills), receiving a personally handwritten envelope invokes a special thrill. So let’s pay special attention to its contents. While many of us may have grown up with compulsory letter-writing drilled into us by parents or school, recent generations are more hesitant when putting pen to paper. And yet letters, cards and handwritten notes are true treats to be treasured and, over time, will be re-read far more than any other form of communication.
