Travel with an open heart
My wife Hermie and I love the West Coast and Namaqualand. A few years ago, before we went on holiday there, we made up 40 gift bags full of school stationery, which we handed out to underprivileged children in the Lambert’s Bay, Springbok and Soebatsfontein areas.
We went back this year and decided to get stuck in again. I made wooden blocks and Hermie made bean bags and wash cloths. Friends donated clothes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, paper, and other teaching materials. We gave everything to the Kabouterland nursery school in Nieuwoudtville, with the help of Erika Kotzé from Willemsrivier Guest Farm.
We dropped off the gift bags on the first day of school after the April holidays. The excitement on the kids’ faces was something else. Their teacher Rochelle Mzane was very happy for all the supplies.
