How can I make my Mac read to me and is it possible to customise the voice that it uses? Janis Cresswell

1 Open Preferences

Go to System Preferences> Accessibility>Speech and then select a System Voice and adjust the Speaking Rate to suit. You can also create a keyboard shortcut to speak selected text.

2 More voices

From the System Voice menu, choose ‘Customise’ and see what extra voices are available. Some, such as ‘Daniel’ have enhanced versions available to download (but check the size).

3 Novelty voices

Scroll down to the English (United States) voices and you’ll see that there is a much greater variety of voices, including fun novelty voices. This list tends to grow steadily too.
