Most people head to Nieu-Bethesda to feast their eyes on Helen Martins’ famous Owl House, but there’s plenty of reason to also pop in at André du Toit’s house, just a stone’s throw away. He serves freshly baked cakes and croissants and the best coffee in town – only on Sundays and public holidays from 9 am to 2 pm. We enjoyed some of his moist Sicilian lemon cake under the pear trees in his backyard (and couldn’t resist chocolate croissants for takeaways), but we’re told you shouldn’t miss the Black Forest cake, which he only serves on the first Sunday of every month.
