The eastern part of India has long been the hub of education and culture, a region that could boast of academic institutes of global repute, a land where Nobel laureates have their roots. But has the region been resting on its laurels? This question is likely to leap into the minds of all stakeholders in the face of the diminishing importance of East India as a destination for higher education. Education in this region has been plagued with a multitude of problems in recent times, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of industrial collaboration, lack of research facilities, politics playing a big part in academics and institutes, all these resulting in a steady exodus of good students, and even faculty, to other parts of India, or even overseas.

In this issue, we seek to explore the reasons behind the current situation. We try to find out, from experts in the area of higher education, how we can identify the problem areas, eliminate the obstacles, and stop bright students from moving to other regions in search of higher education. They also share their vision about the prospect and future of education in the East, with special reference to the measures adopted by their own institutes to take the region forward in the realm of higher studies. Prof. Goutam Roy Chowdhury, Founder Chairman of Techno India Group (TIG) & Techno India University (TIU), shared his vision on ways to elevate the eastern region to feature among the top destinations for higher studies.
