1946 – a good year for top-link steam locomotives

THE nameplates from two top link locomotives that shared the year of their birth and the year they met their end will play leading roles in Great Central’s June 2 auction at Stoneleigh Park.They are Devizes Castle from GWR No. 7002 and City of Hereford from LMS Princess Coronation No. 46255.

The GWR representative was built at Swindon in June 1946 and withdrawn from Worcester (85A) in March 1964, and in October 1940.The LMS Pacific was built at Crewe in October 1946 and pensioned off in September 1964 from Carlisle Kingmoor (12A), so giving these two fine engines a service life of just under 18 years.
