Second tier makes way for A4, but is ready for its own battle

NAMEPLATES from two of the Big Four’s second tier flagship express locomotives will vie for attention in Great Central’s December 7 sale, although top tier Wild Swan from LNER A4 No. 60021 is expected to be the star turn, as reported in last month’s issue.

Those second tier plates are (LMS Royal Scot No. 46153), and from LNER A3 No. 60109. The first of these engines to enter traffic was No. 60109, which was outshopped by Doncaster works in July 1923, carrying the name of the 1867 Derby winner, and withdrawn from King’s Cross (34A) in December 1962, just months before its 40th birthday.
