Far-right populist Jair Bolsonaro wins Brazil presidential election

SAO PAULO, Brazil - Brazil became the latest country to shift toward far-right populism on Sunday, electing as president a bombastic former army captain who has insulted women and racial minorities, praised the country's former military dictatorship and defended the use of torture.

Jair Bolsonaro garnered 55 percent of the vote compared with 45 percent for his competitor, Fernando Haddad, election officials said. The triumph marks a substantial change for Latin America's largest democracy, which has been dominated for years by Haddad's left-leaning and scandal-plagued Workers' Party.
