One of the bullets of that unknown assailant did some real damage too. It ripped into the hip of then 19-year-old Ricardo Salinas as he was leaving an Aurora convenience store and severed his spine.
Despite life as a paraplegic, Rick refused to let those injuries slow him down. He found work in medical supplies and competed in myriad wheelchair sporting events, including riding an arm-powered hand cycle from Boston to St. Louis in a 22-day "Face of America" trek with other able-bodied and disabled athletes as part of World T.E.A.M. Sports.
