Proposed in 2012, the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards require automakers to nearly double the average fuel economy of new cars and trucks by 2025—making the US and Canada the only two major nations to adopt such long-range goals.
In this interview, Deborah Sivas, a professor of environmental law at Stanford University, explains the history of the CAFE standards, the new EPA proposals, the reasons that California has a waiver that allows it to set stricter fuel standards, and the possibility of litigation from California to prevent the administration’s new measures.
