- A Princess of Mars: Mars, Book 1
1
"Only moments before, I lay in the Arizona cave paralyzed by a strange gas. Now, here I stand on the Arizona bluff, my bodyless spirit gazing at the stars. My attention is drawn to a large red star, Mars, the god of war, and for me, the fighting man, it has always held the power of irresistible enchantment. I closed my eyes, stretched out my arms and was drawn through the trackless immensity of space. There was an instant of extreme cold and utter darkness. I opened my eyes upon a strange and weird landscape. I knew that I was on Mars.”
- Thuvia, Maid of Mars
4
Mars is divided, as not one, but two princes and a Jeddak vie for the love of Thuvia of Ptarth. When she is mysteriously kidnapped, treachery threatens to throw Barsoom into a bloody war. Now Cathoris must follow in the footsteps of his famous father, John Carter. He must overcome phantom armies, dangerous spies and savage beasts in a heroic attempt to rescue not only his true love, but to save and reunite Mars.
- The Chessmen of Mars
5
There is a game on Mars similar to chess-very similar, save that it is played on a board of a hundred squares, and with ornate pieces. The Martians call it jetan, and it is as old as the civilization of Barsoom. But in the Martian city of Manator, jetan is no game. The chiefs of Manator play with living pieces--criminals, slaves, or warriors eager for fame. The opposing chessmen duel to the death for possession of their squares. The chiefs of Mantor play for great stakes, but the most closely fought contest in the huge arena was that in which the prize was Tara, Princess of Helium and daughter of the Warlord of Mars--a prisoner and slave in Manator.
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) had various jobs before getting his first fiction published at the age of 37. He established himself with wildly imaginative, swashbuckling romances about Tarzan of the Apes, John Carter of Mars and other heroes, all at large in exotic environments of perpetual adventure. Tarzan was particularly successful, appearing in silent film as early as 1918 and making the author famous. Burroughs wrote science fiction, westerns and historical adventure, all charged with his propulsive prose and often startling inventiveness. Although he claimed he sought only to provide entertainment, his work has been credited as inspirational by many authors and scientists.
