As an artist and photographer he is requested to go to the battlefront and capture Confederate bravery on film. But he needs an assistant trained in photography. Because of time constraints, he has no choice but to accept an independent young woman named Frankie Aimes. And so the two load up their equipment and head for the dangers of the battlefield. But there is another danger hanging over their heads, a danger Bristol knows nothing about, for Frankie is hiding a secret that could get them both killed if it is discovered.

In a coma, stripped of his possessions by scavengers, he is mistakenly transported to the Union army hospital. When he comes out of his coma, he has no memory and is placed in Ward K, the ward for hopeless cases. He is cared for by nurse Grace Swenson, a devout Quaker. Upon her arrival, she is treated well, but cannot seem to make a place for herself with the Rocklins or her father. Hoping to help his daughter, Mark buys a plantation for her, with the requirement that she marry for the property to be put in her name. Desperate to have a place of her own and to live life her own way, Allyn arranges a marriage to Jason Larrimore, the blockade-runner who brought her to Gracefield. Their arrangement soon becomes more troublesome, and more rewarding, than either could have ever guessed.
