About this series

In Like a Christ Andrew Murray presents 31 chapters a true manual of Christian life.
This is an essential book for you who want to follow the footsteps of Jesus.

And now I entrust the little book to the gracious care of the blessed Lord of whose glory it seeks to tell May He give us to see that there is no beauty or blessedness like that of a Christ-like life. May He teach us to believe that in union with Him the Christ-like life is indeed for us. And as each day we listen to what His Word tells us of His image, may each one of us have grace to say, "O my Father! even as Thy beloved Son lived in Thee, with Thee, for Thee on earth, even so would I also live."

The Footsteps of Jesus: Things to be sought and things to be shunned
The Footsteps of Jesus: Things to be sought and things to be shunned

We have a perfect exhibition of the various graces after which we should aspire, in "the man Christ Jesus," who has left us an example that we should follow His steps. In thinking as He thought, feeling as He felt, and walking as He walked the whole of experimental and practical religion is embodied. But as the spirit which was in Him was largely transfused into, and reflected by, many of His faithful servants it follows that while we are treading in their footsteps that we are at the same time treading in His. It is lamentable to think that of the many who bear the name of Christ that there are so few who can truly say, "But we have the mind of Christ." The name of Christ, however, will be of no avail without the mind of Christ. A kind, compassionate, gentle, loving temper presents one of the most winning features of true religion; and by its silent and softening influence you will do more real service to Christianity, than by the loudest professions, or by the exhibition of a cold and heartless orthodoxy." "Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you." Ephesians 4:31-32. May the perusal of the following earnest pages be blessed for the promotion of such a temper! May He, to whom the Spirit was not given by measure, impart to the reader out of His inexhaustible fullness, abounding grace; and thus cause him to abound more and more in all those fruits of righteousness, which are for his own personal well being for the honor of the Christian cause and the praise and glory of God!

  • The Secret of Abiding Peace

    11

    The Secret of Abiding Peace
    The Secret of Abiding Peace

Our subject is "The Secret of Abiding Peace". Abounding joy, and Abundant Victory in War Times and at All Times." You will find the text in Genesis 5:24, "Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." In the description of Enoch's walk given in our text we find the secret of abiding peace, abounding joy, and abundant victory in war times and at all times. To my mind, the text is one of the most fascinating and thrilling verses in the entire Bible. It sounds more like a song from a heavenly world than a plain statement of historical facts regarding a humble inhabitant of this world of ours, but such it is, and it is possible for each one of us to so live and act that it may be recorded of us, "He walked with God," and later, "then he was no more, because God took him away." The position of this verse in the Bible is significant and suggestive. There has been, in the verses immediately preceding, a very ordinary, commonplace, and, at first sight, long recital of how one man after another of the olden time lived so many years, fathered a son, continued to live so many years, and fathered other sons and daughters, and then died. Then suddenly Enoch is introduced and the story begins just as the other stories begin and goes on just as the other stories go on, and seems about to end just as the other stories end, but, no, there is this fresh breath from heaven and these melodious tones sound out: "Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." Then the story goes on again in the same old strain. Remember that this account belongs to a far away time, thousands of years before Christ, and about a thousand years before the Flood, and yet what depth of truth and beauty there is in it. Are there not lessons for us to learn from that far, far-away olden time? The entire authentic history of Enoch is contained in nine verses in the Bible, six in the Old Testament, three in the New. History outside of the Bible is utterly unacquainted with him, yet he stands out as one of the most remarkable and admirable men of whom history speaks, a man whom God honored as He has honored but one other member of the entire race. Enoch's greatness was the kind that pleases God. We are told in the 11th chapter of Hebrews and the fifth verse that "By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God." Quite likely his greatness did not win very hearty commendation from his contemporaries. However, that was not of much consequence. His greatness did not consist of military renown, political power, profound scholarship, successful statesmanship, splendid artistic or architectural genius, or even of magnificent philanthropic achievement. It was greatness of a more quiet and less pretentious and visible nature, but of a far more real and lasting nature; it was greatness of character. "He walked with God," and God so enjoyed his fellowship that He took Enoch to be with Himself permanently. I wish to make clear to you all three things: first, what it is to walk with God; second, what are some of the results of walking with God; third, how we may get into such a walk ourselves

Prayer meetings: Preparing for the week of prayer

"All these continued in common agreement in prayer and supplication." Acts 1:14. In all churches that are not fully bound and bound by liturgies and rituals, it has been common to hold meetings for social prayer. We call them prayer meetings. Now, it may be profitable, from time to time, to look at some of our institutions, see if they are scriptural to realize their defects, see in what sense they can be improved or observe their merits so that we can be further induced to carry them . The subject of this message was suggested by the fact that we will meet for a day of prayer tomorrow, it is the prayer meetings assemblies of the people of God for worship of this peculiar kind that consists of each expressing his desire before the Lord. Let me share with you this message

    The Friendships of Jesus

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you." John 15:13-15 George MacDonald said in an address, "The longer I live, the more I am assured that the business of life, is to understand the Lord Jesus Christ." If this is true, whatever sheds even a little light on the character or life of Christ, is worth while. Nothing reveals a man's heart, better than his friendships. The kind of friend he istells the kind of man he is. The personal friendships of Jesus reveal many tender and beautiful things in his character. They show us also what is possible for us in divine friendship; for the heart of Jesus is the same yesterday, and today, and forever. These chapters are only suggestivenot exhaustive. If they make the way into close personal friendship with Jesus any plainer for those who hunger for such blessed intimacythat will be reward enough.

"Will He plead against me with His great power? No, but He would put strength in me. "Job 23: 6. No doubt Job meant to say that if God would allow him to argue his case before Him, it was his belief that God, so far from taking advantage of His superior strength in the controversy, would even strengthen him, that the controversy might be fair and that the judgment might be unbiased. "He would not plead against me with His great strength. In this blessed text, based on the book of Job, Pastor Charles Spurgeon will teach us a message of faith.

Helps to intercession: A 31 Day Prayer Devotional: Your Daily Prayer Devotional

Pray Without Ceasing. - Who can do this? How can one do it who is surrounded by the cares of daily life? How can a mother love her child without ceasing? How can the eyelid without ceasing hold itself ready to protect the eye? How can I breathe and feel and hear without ceasing? Because all these are the functions of a healthy, natural life. And so, if the spiritual life be healthy, under the full power of the Holy Spirit, praying without ceasing will be natural. Pray Without Ceasing. - Does it refer to continual acts of prayer, in which we are to persevere till we obtain, or to the spirit of prayerfulness that should animate us all the day? It includes both. The example of our Lord Jesus shows us this. We have to enter our closet for special seasons of prayer; we are at times to persevere there in importunate prayer. We are also all the day to walk in God's presence, with the whole heart set upon heavenly things. Without set times of prayer, the spirit of prayer will be dull and feeble. Without the continual prayerfulness, the set times will not avail. Pray Without Ceasing. - Does that refer to prayer for ourselves or others? To both. It is because many confine it to themselves that they fail so in practicing it. It is only when the branch gives itself to bear fruit, more fruit, much fruit, that it can live a healthy life, and expect a rich inflow of sap. The death of Christ brought Him to the place of everlasting intercession. Your death with Him to sin and self sets you free from the care of self, and elevates you to the dignity of intercessor - one who can get life and blessing from God for others. Know your calling; begin this your work. Give yourself wholly to it, and before you know it you will be finding something of this "Praying always" within you.

Lord, Teach me to pray: Pray Without Ceasing

Andrew Murray was a man of prayer, that is, he fully lived his faith in the Lord Jesus and lived fully such practice to the point of intensely proving the power of prayer during his life. His life was a testimony of what God wants to do in each one of us from the moment we decide to live intensely a life of prayer and intimacy with God. In our lives, as in the life of Andrew Murray, the need for prayer arises from the search for a blessing to be achieved, from confession to God, gratitude, petition, or worship. This book invites you to set aside a daily time to seek God, giving your prayers, requests and thanks to the Lord for a personal and genuine experience of faith. The text presents a daily message of meditation on the Word of God regarding prayer, its importance and necessity in our day to day life.

Learning with Jesus: a daily devotional on the gospels
Learning with Jesus: a daily devotional on the gospels

In Learning with Jesus: a daily devotional on the gospels we will have a daily message inspired by the Holy Bible. There are 365 messages, one for each day of the year. Make this book a learning at the feet of Christ. Can there be any account in the world that is interesting to us as the history of our Lord and Savior, while I have spent thirty-three years upon earth? There were people with him who heard his sayings and observed his actions. Four holy men, as you are aware, wrote accounts of his life. It might well be supposed that these histories would not contradict each other, for they were all true. But the writers did not only write what they knew to be true, but the Holy Spirit instructed them to relate. They were inspired of God. When we read their writings, we read the words of God himself. With what reverence should we attend! Some of these four Evangelists related one event, and some related another, it is interesting to place their accounts together, endeavoring to observe, as well as we can, the order of time in which the events occurred. Such an arrangement is called "Harmony of the gospels." Let us read of Him, the one that came into the world to save us. Everything that concerns you is of the greatest importance to us; for if we do not believe in him, and love him above all, we shall perish forever. Let us, therefore, always before we read, lift up our hearts to God in prayer. "The Lord, grant unto us thy Holy Spirit, that our souls may be saved by the knowledge of thy blessed Son!"
