About this series
Arabian horse breeder Shareen Van Khoten is missing! Ex-cop Kim Kovak fears it may have something to do with her friend’s obsessive hunt for her beloved stolen mares.
Kim’s partner, fraud investigator Garrett Quaid, has a different fear. If Shareen’s disappearance is related to the lost horses, it’s possible that Charles Léon, head of an international horse theft ring, is involved. Worse, if Kim tries to rescue her friend, she could end up back in Léon’s deadly crosshairs.
Resolved to find her friend, Kim goes to Arizona to talk to Shareen’s devoted husband, Albert. But he is acting oddly, and Kim’s cop radar has her wondering why. She comes away from the visit with more questions than answers – and an even greater urgency to find Shareen.
Upside, Garrett is coming to lend a hand.
Downside, when Garret returns home from Arizona, he’s sidetracked by an insurance claim on several dead pasture horses. The routine farm visit takes a grisly turn and Garrett finds himself neck deep in yet another twisted mystery.
Between Garrett’s case and Kim’s quest, they really need help! The cavalry appears in the form of good friends, an old buddy, and an unusual new associate. Shocking finds, explosive violence, betrayals, feuds, and revelations – so many things both Lost and Found.
Business as usual for Kovak and Quaid.

In Toni Leland's first Kovak & Quaid mystery, a national champion show jumper in an Ohio horse training barn is replaced by a look-alike, but the switch isn't discovered for months. Comfortable in the safe world of equine photography, ex-cop Kim Kovak thinks she has finally moved past the terror of a routine patrol that changed her life forever. Then a simple photo shoot catapults her into the middle of a dangerous arena of horse theft. Old habits die hard and Kim goes after the truth with a vengeance. Private investigator Garrett Quaid is determined to uncover insurance fraud and expose whoever is organizing a series of horse thefts where ringers are used and big insurance claims are paid. Ex-military and a quiet loner, Quaid doesn't welcome the meddling of one pushy photographer who always seems to be one jump ahead of him. Together, and often at odds, Kovak and Quaid try to out-sleuth each other and, in the process, learn the chilling truth about the crimes.

Author Toni Leland continues the series of Kovak & Quaid in this second book. Kim Kovak is a well-known equine photographer, a profession she adopted after recovering from a shooting accident that maimed her leg, killed her police horse, and forced her retirement from the Columbus Ohio Mounted Police Unit. When a simple magazine assignment in Chicago involves an encounter with a runaway carriage horse, Kim is catapulted into the news, and the owner of a new equestrian attraction begs Kim to find the person responsible for the deadly epidemic sweeping through the barn. Horrified by the brutality of human nature, Kim accepts the job, but not without reservations. She may be retired law enforcement, but she's no private eye. Insurance fraud investigator Garrett Quaid is also in Chicago, looking into a client's suspicions about an unfaithful husband. When Kovak calls to ask for help, Quaid finds himself again working with the woman who both hindered and helped track down a horse theft ring in Ohio the previous summer. Only this time, the working relationship is different. A nasty scheme for revenge takes Kovak & Quaid on a roller coaster ride through professional jealousy and love-hate relationships in the world of talented and valuable performing horses. Will the two of them catch the perpetrators of a treacherous plot to put the Dream Horse Ballet out of business?

Treacherous women, beautiful horses, and dangerous criminals confront Kovak & Quaid at every turn in Toni Leland's third book in the Kovak & Quaid mystery series. Foals are dying of unknown causes at a large Arabian horse farm, sending ex-cop Kim Kovak and fraud investigator Garrett Quaid on a relentless search for answers, leading them to some dark corners of human nature, a brush with international crime, and a shocking discovery. Kim’s penchant for knowing all the details, and tracking down bad guys gets her into trouble – again – opening even more doors to the past, and putting her partnership with Quaid in jeopardy. To make things more complicated, the unspoken attraction between these two simmers to the surface, threatening to boil over. Will Kovak & Quaid finally take care of all the Unfinished Business?
- Risky Business: a Kovak & Quaid Horse Mystery, #4

“Hello, Kimmie.” Ex-cop Kim Kovak is stunned. Peter is back, the former fiancé who abandoned her years ago during her painful recovery from a career-ending injury. Why is he here? What is he after? Garrett Quaid, Kim’s part-time investigative partner and now close friend, is wondering the same thing. And then the cases start cropping up. On a photo shoot at a horse show featuring the Black Horsemen of Ohio, Kim observes what might be a racially motivated attack against a young protégé of the group’s sponsor, legendary African American horse trainer Bill Scott. When odd things begin to happen at Scott’s own stables, Kim is asked to investigate, but immediately finds herself surrounded by stonewalls. Mouths are closed, everyone is hiding things, and nothing is what it seems. Meanwhile, Quaid is being wooed by a new insurance company, and agrees to take on an assignment to test the waters. His mission is to look into a suspiciously high number of claims generated by a series of very sudden horse deaths at an Indiana racetrack. As he begins seining for information, clues are scarce and suspects ellusive. Could this number of deaths be accidental? Coincidental? Or are they deliberate? Weave in a tangle of deceptions, obsessions and schemes, and the mystery business gets extra risky, especially when Kovak and Quaid start pulling the threads in Toni Leland's fourth book in the series.
