About this series

Carl the Mistake has just learned two facts.

Hell is real, but it is called Nevernot.

And it is run by the mysterious Ministry of Dark Deeds.

The last thing Carl remembers is getting clocked in the face with a magical toaster before falling from the celestial steps of Elysium, Inc. Now he’s stuck in the hellish Nevernot where demons drink pig urine and everyone possesses spectacularly disturbing surnames.

For instance, consider the beheaded demon Malizia Lustyslime, who recently tried to tempt Carl from his quest during a surprise visit to the Infinite Beach. She’s intent on taking Carl to see his former best friend Chip suffer through the Anchoring Feast, the ultimate torture for any demon, hag, or slithering hell beast. She believes Carl is the Mistake that will bring eternal chaos to all the multiverse.

And she might be right.

But Carl has the Cosmic Swing of Things on his side. Time is running out for his best friend, his new friends in Nevernot, and the rest of the myriad universes he’s never even visited. And if there’s anything Carl has learned in his several thousand recycled lifetimes, it’s that when the going gets tough…

... it's only going to get worse.

Carl has experienced the apocalypse thousands of times, although he wouldn't know Armageddon if it bit him on the ass. Carl is the Wondrous Blunder, an accidentally immortal soul living a recycled existence. Despite messages and hints from a seemingly higher power, he has no idea that the multiverse is crumbling around him. Something inexplicable is happening to reality itself and the whole thing has something to do with Carl's own Creator, a mysterious deity who recently took an extended leave from the office. Yes, the Gods use cubicles. They're just empty right now.

Carl is a Mistake not in the sense that he surprised his parents by being conceived, but in the sense that he is accidentally immortal and threatens to disrupt the Cosmic Swing of Things, ushering the era of Divine Intermission. It is for this reason that he has been hurried to another reality in order to meet a retired deity. With the proper help, he might be able to set the universe right. But first, he must survive his time on the Infinite Beach, where he may have garnered the attention of something much more sinister than an impending cosmic cataclysm...

Carl is the Wondrous Blunder. He is a cosmic mistake who is somehow the only being capable of preventing an apocalypse known as the Divine Intermission, the moment when all heavenly creators give up on their creations and take one last eternal break. His life has not been easy. Carl is accidentally immortal, his best friend is an annoying and otherworldly being named Chip, and his most recent vacation was to a pocket universe called The Infinite Beach, where he found himself face to face with a retired deity. It is after parting from this immaculate tropical paradise that we rejoin Carl and his friends on their quest to fix the multiverse. With Chip having taken the form of a mammoth sea turtle, Carl sets sail on his friend's back armed with encyclopedias, fruit, and an ancient magical toaster. The Cosmic Swing of Things hangs in the balance.

This is a short story set in the Divine Intermission universe and serves as a link between books 3 and 4. Professional demonic mischief-maker Nathaniel Babystomper wants nothing more than to be human. He's tired of the demon's life - there's simply too much unfettered chaos and squishy violence. Luckily for him, the fluctuating Cosmic Swing of Things has provided an opportunity to obtain what he's always dreamt of having: humanity. Nathaniel has decided to tell his best friends from Hell about this monumental decision. With their support, the transition to humanity might be less intimidating. There's just one problem. His friends think it's a terrible idea. What exactly is humanity? Is hell such a bad place? And why exactly don't demons like fresh fruit? This is the story of a demon who discovered what it meant to be human, and the friends who tried to drag him back to hell.
