Description

In this special release, we speak with Ambassador (ret.) Susan Page about the political turmoil engulfing Haiti in the aftermath of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Ambassador Page,  who served as Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations in Haiti, in addition to a range of other diplomatic postings with the United States, discusses Haiti's history post-independence, and frames the current struggles the country faces in the context of its long history -- much of which has been affected by foreign intervention. Ambassador Page provides her perspectives on what the international community should and should not do, while emphasizing her view that the Haitian people should have agency over their own political decisions in the long road ahead.Ambassador Page currently teaches at the Ford School of Public Policy, at the University of Michigan.
