We are a few weeks away from the Jets attempting to stock their roster with young talent. The team currently owns the third overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Jets lack a second round pick after their trade last year with the Colts to move up for Sam Darnold, but they own an extra third round pick due to last year's Teddy Bridgewater trade. On today's podcast we discuss the NFL Draft. Namely we talk about the role a given player's position should play into a team's decision-making. I think people frequently only advocate for their team picking players at weak spots, but I argue that more should go into it than that. I talk about three other aspects that I believe should matter, breaking a tie between two prospects, looking at the strength of a class, and building matchup problems for opponents. Jets Defensive Tiers Episode 807 2/19/20: Yesterday on our show we placed Jets offensive players under contract into one of four tiers. The top tier is for elite talent. The second tier is for above average players or young players with the potential to get there one day. The third tier is for functional players or young players with the potential to get there. The fourth tier is for players who are lucky to have a spot on an NFL roster. Today we turn our attention to the defensive side of the ball. Things were not pretty on offense. There aren't many building blocks under contract for the Jets. The view is brighter on the defensive side of the ball. The defense was the stronger of the two units for the Jets in 2019. I offer three positions where I like the depth the Jets have. Before we start, I do need to clarify what I mean by depth. There are very few position groups for any team in the NFL where the backups are proven, quality players. That just doesn't happen in today's NFL with limited practice time to develop fringe players and a salary cap, which makes it difficult to retain proven guys who do not start. When I talk about depth, I am partially talking about upside. At which spots do the Jets have a combination of proven players and reserves who have upside? I understand it gets a bit subjective there since upside is generally in the eye of the beholder. I think we still genuinely know upside when we see it. On yesterday's podcast I went through pick by pick and offered thoughts on each player the Jets added. On today's show I give thoughts on the big picture. What did I like? What didn't I like? What did I notice? I think any discussion of likes has to start with the offensive line. After years of ignoring the trenches in the early stages of the Draft, the Jets used the eleventh pick and another top 130 pick on offensive line prospects. They also added additional picks during the value stages of the Draft. These were among my likes. What about dislikes? The addition of Denzel Mims feels like a great value, but only adding one receiver in a deep class at the position feels like a missed opportunity. What is a general thought? The Jets clearly valued measurables in this Draft. Whether that will ultimately prove to be a successful approach is unclear. On a superficial level, there are some similarities. In both instances, the Jets traded up into the top five to land a new signal caller. Both Mark Sanchez and Sam Darnold attended USC in college. Those are indeed superficial comparisons, however. These are two different players, and they entered different circumstances. Those differences are the focus of our podcast today. The Jets of 2018 are very different from the Jets of 2009, and one could make the argument this situation is more conducive to the growth of a young quarterback.
