Description

In this episode of Eighty Twenty, Georgia and Shanina welcome hypnotherapist, mindset coach, and musician, Atarah Valentine. Atarah shares openly about his journey to becoming a mindset coach, starting from a childhood filled with abuse and bullying which led him to constantly seek external validation through musical success and appearance.
Despite achieving outward signs of success like a record deal, Atarah struggled with self-esteem and wanting to transform himself thinking it would help his insides “catch up”. His unhealthy perfectionism fueled an eating disorder while he emotionally detached from his real self more and more. Eventually realizing unconditional self-acceptance was necessary to feel whole, Atarah found self-compassion and began helping others by organically sharing his experience through social media.  It was through this that Atarah found his new calling as a hypnotherapist and mindset coach, booked out 6 months in advance!
He explains his belief that no one is fundamentally broken or has internal wounds needing healed – instead it’s about unlearning past conditioning and reactions through understanding how the brain works. Atarah shares emotional intelligence tools and techniques from his practice, emphasizing the importance of separating feelings from thoughts and developing the skill of emotional resilience.
Throughout the conversation, themes emerge around the danger of using external achievement as a stand-in for intrinsic self-worth and self-acceptance. Atarah offers perspective on embracing change as an ongoing learning process based in compassion rather than striving for perfection. He models vulnerability, encouraging crying openly to unload against the overwhelming and uncertain aspects of life. The dialogue highlights mindfulness and presence as central to living wholeheartedly.
