Description
DISCLAIMER: This episode discusses the in custody death of an inmate and the events leading up to it. Listener discretion is advised.
In December, 2019 Forsyth County jail inmate, John Neville allegedly fell off his top bunk and exhibited seizure like symptoms. Five correctional officers and one correctional nurse, Michelle Heughins RN, a correctional nurse on duty, responded to his cell. He was held down prone by the officers. The nurse was often not granted access to Neville, who was first responsive and fighting, then later becoming unresponsive. Upon finding the patient had no pulse and was not breathing, Nurse Heughins called for an AED and began CPR. Neville died of positional asphyxiation two days later in the hospital. The five officers and one nurse were criminally charged with involuntary manslaughter. However the Grand Jury decided to ONLY indict the nurse.
Correctional nurse, Michelle Heughins RN, joins Nurses Uncorked to tell her story, the three year court battle, and the outcome of her case. This is a story of courage and resiliency, but also a story of the ongoing persecution of nurses.
