Description
All relationships are complicated… but perhaps none are more complicated than the relationship between mother and daughter. Today, we get honest about some of the factors that make the mother-daughter relationship so loaded… things we’ve learned both as therapists, and have experienced in our own lives.
Listen as we discuss:
The messages we receive as women about having a daughter:
That we will either be best friends or have a lot of conflict with our daughters
That we are not complete unless we have a daughter
The ways that societal expectations for little boys and little girls are different
How trying to change the roles and expectations for women make parenting our daughters complicated
How our own experiences with female friendships and with our own mothers shape our relationships with our daughters
How our own insecurities show up in our relationships with our daughters
How we can sometimes try to correct things that we see in our daughters because we see them in ourselves, and how it can be really hard to separate what is ours from what is hers
The elephant in the room... how our relationships with our own mothers shapes our relationships with our daughters
Plus, Andrea channels her inner Freud; Jessica models receiving a compliment; and we both step into the confessional a record number of times as we discuss our raw thoughts and feelings about the complicated relationships we have with the relationship we have with having daughters (<< did you catch all of the layers here??).
