In Gnostic mythology, particularly in texts like the Secret Book of John, the divine is often depicted as a complex interplay between the divine feminine and masculine principles. Barbelo, representing the divine feminine, is associated with wisdom and serves as the emanation or companion to the divine masculine principle. The union of these principles gives rise to a divine offspring, symbolized as the "Son of God" or the "Light," embodying spiritual enlightenment and knowledge. 

In the context of simulation theory, parallels between these symbolic constructs and the idea that our perceived reality is a simulated construct are easily drawn. The divine principles may be seen as analogous to fundamental forces shaping the simulated reality, and the quest for gnosis aligns with the pursuit of understanding the nature of this simulated existence, mirroring the Gnostic emphasis on transcending the material world to attain higher knowledge.

Barbelo is often considered a divine emanation or aeon. She is described as the first emanation from the ultimate, ineffable God. Barbelo plays a significant role in certain Gnostic texts, including the Secret Book of John, where she is portrayed as the mother or consort of the self-generated divine being, often identified as mother of Christ or the Savior. The Gnostic cosmology is complex, and Barbelo's role varies across different Gnostic traditions.
