Welcome to The Criterion Connection, a podcast about The Criterion Collection. On this episode McKenzie (she/her) & Ian (they/them) discuss 8 ½ (1963)! Secretly, not so secretly, this is somewhat of a trojan horse episode on SPINE #INVALID Rob Marshall's NINE (2009), an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name which is itself an adaptation of Fellini's film. Anyway... we also chat about the film in question (we promise). We discuss the way in which Fellini portrays "himself", the takeaways we had from his sympathetic portrayal of Guido, and treatment of the various women at the center of Guido's life. Other topics discussed: Ian worked through Todd Haynes' oeuvre and discovered a hidden gem, McKenzie discusses Greg Araki's Doom Trilogy (specifically TOTALLY FUCKED UP (1993), and we go through whats coming to the Criterion Channel in JULY.
