In this episode of Kid’s Corner, Dr. Liz Mumper discusses MIS-C (Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children) and the incidence of this diagnosis with COVID-19. MIS-C is also referred to as Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome temporally associated with SARS-COV2 (PIM-TS).
Common symptoms of MIS-C in babies show as a rash and/or diarrhea. In older children, the symptoms are respiratory.
MIS-C is similar to Kawasaki’s disease, although the symptoms usually resolve in contrast to Kawasaki’s disease.
Treatment for MIS-C includes:• supportive care and observation• maintaining volume status as dehydration worsens symptoms• steroids• IVIG• Interleukin blockers• anti-coagulation• cardiology work-up with an EKG and cardiac echo
