Description

It's World Mental Health Day, with this year's theme being "Mental health is a universal human right.” Everyone has not only the right to access quality mental health care but also social support, autonomy, community, and more. Yet, due to the lack of resources and the stigma around mental health issues, this right continues to be infringed on. Today's newsletter focuses on how the violation of this right and our over-reliance on policing contributes to a carceral system for mental health where, instead of support, mental illness is penalized. Take ActionSupport organizations like Fireweed Collective, Black Girls Smile, Asian Mental Health Collective, Immigrants Rising, and We R Native, providing mental health services and education. Use peer support and crisis hotlines that are divested from the police, including Trans Lifeline, BlackLine, DeQH, and the LGBT National Help Center. This podcast uses computer-generated audio.
