Description

Latinx and Latine are gender-neutral terms for people or things of Latin American descent. But some people and institutions have inserted “Latinx” into press releases and rulebooks without any real commitment to supporting trans and gender non-conforming people of Latin American heritage. And others have joined a wave of conservative pushback against the term, like when the New York Times editorial board published a high school student’s anti-Latinx op-ed. Today, Alicia reminds us that though there’s transphobic resistance to gender-inclusive language in Spanish just like there is in English, respecting trans and non-binary Spanish speakers linguistically is a necessary first step towards creating liberation.TAKE ACTIONSupport Trans Asylum Seeker Support Network, Familia TQLM, and the Trans Justice Funding Project.Make it a practice to introduce yourself with your name and pronouns and include your pronouns in your email signature, social media bios, etc. We’d love to hear your reflections on today’s episode - email us at hello@antiracismdaily.com.
