Melanie talks about her journey to being an Olympic Gold Medalist and a World Record Holder and what it took to get there, the sacrifices she had to make growing up as a kid, and the lessons she has learned from swimming.
Melanie started swimming at 3 years old and by the time she was coming out of high school in 1987, she posted the fastest time in the nation in the 100yd freestyle at 50.6 seconds. She attended and Swam at the University of Virginia during college and qualified for the Olympics where she won and became an Olympic Gold Medalist in the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay in 1996 for Team USA. And to top that all off she is the current Swimming World Record Holder from 2015 in the Women’s 45-49 year old age group 100m Freestyle Event.
Melanie was also the first female swimmer sponsored by NIKE, the first ever TIMEX Fitness Director and the first Ironman athlete sponsored by a rock band – Cheap Trick. She also was a model featured in numerous magazines including Marie Claire, Vogue, Swimming World, Triathlete, as well as Nike catalogs.
