Description
Even though many count Ayn Rand as a libertarian, she was a vocal critic of the libertarian movement and rejected the label. In a new book on the intellectual history of the libertarian movement, Matt Zwolinski and John Tomasi repeat the conventional view that Rand was a libertarian. But in spite of their intentions, the book offers a great deal of evidence for why Rand's ideas were essentially different from those of many prominent figures in the movement. Indeed, the philosophical incompatibility of many of the doctrines that have been lumped together as "libertarian" may help explain why, as the authors put it, the movement finds itself increasingly divided and beset by internal strife. Is there a coherent libertarian ideology? If not, what if anything holds the movement together? What are the reasons Objectivists have been so critical of the movement over the years? Join Ben Bayer and Niko Sotirakopoulos to discuss these and related questions in light of the history revealed by this book.
