Description
The humanities are fields in crisis: enrollment is declining, and some universities are closing departments entirely. The situation has prompted humanities scholars to argue for the importance of their fields. Agnes Callard, a philosophy professor at the University of Chicago, recently contended in the New York Times that these arguments will fail and admitted that she does not know what the value of the humanities is. Are the humanities valuable fields, and why? How should we evaluate their current state? What are the merits of the common arguments defending the humanities? And what should we make of a professor’s contention that she does not know the value of her field? Join Ben Bayer and Sam Weaver for a discussion of these and other questions.
