Description

Since our launch over a year ago, The Only One In The Room hasn’t missed a week. No matter what was going on we made sure you’ve had an episode to listen to every single Tuesday. But if you’re like us this week, then you are distraught, exhausted, heartbroken and confused. And because the world is such a fragile, tumultuous place right now, we’ve decided not to release the beautiful interview that we had all ready for you until next week.
We’d like to tell you that we’ve put something special together for you, but the truth is we haven’t. We didn’t hustle to get some fabulous celebrity guest who could beautifully articulate what we’re all feeling right now. We’re not releasing a new episode. We’re not promoting anything on social media. Everything feels so heavy right now that we’re just taking this week to rest and to give you a chance to rest and process too.
And next week, as long as it feels right, we’ll have that episode for you, and then one every Tuesday and Thursday as usual. In the meantime, please check out some of our favorite episodes with guests who have educated us about what we’re all facing right now.
Guests like:
-Jay Conner, The Only Black Man In The Writer’s Room
-Sharoni Little, The Only Single Black Mother Who Honors The Value Of Education
-Mario Van Peebles, The Only African-American Father & Son In the Business
-Dolores Robinson, The Only Octogenarian Living Her Best Life Ever
-Jon Cryer, The Only Supervillain fighting wrongful convictions
We posted a video in our Facebook Group today asking for your thoughts and feelings about what’s going on. We want to create a safe space for you to have those conversations. We want to have those conversations with you.
So look for us there this week, and we’ll see you next week with all new episodes. And if you find yourself feeling alone, like you’re the only one in the room having these experiences, please know that you aren’t alone. We’re right here with you.

Titles in the series (100)

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.
